(AP) — So much hype over this Masters. So many folks leaving early. Even as Tiger Woods took a risky detour down the 10th fairway on his way to a theatrical par on the final hole, only a moderate-sized gallery hung around long enough Friday afternoon to surround the 18th green. Hundreds of fans carrying their folding chairs already were headed toward the exit on a quiet golf course. The Grand Slam that Woods said was “easily within reason” will have to start with the second-best comeback at Augusta National. “You can come back pretty quickly here,” Woods said.
What each contender needs to do (and avoid) – Golf
ESPN – Apr 12, 2008
– Quick history lesson: Entering the final round of the 1956 Masters, Jack Burke Jr. trailed by eight strokes, lingering in a share of fourth place. That day, he made up the largest deficit by a champion in tournament history, coming from behind to defeat then-amateur Ken Venturi by one. Don’t expect a similar result Sunday. In fact, until last year, every champion since 1990 had come from the final pairing, as Augusta National traditionally turns into follow-the-leader in final rounds.

- Phil Mickelson was in great shape to go after his third Masters championship. But then Augusta National got the best of Mickelson, sending him on a roller coaster of a Saturday. He went from as high as third to a nine-way tie for seventh heading into today’s final round. "It was a disappointing day, obviously," said Mickelson, who shot 75. "I didn’t play very well, and it was a day where there were some low scores out there.

Seattle Post Intelligencer – Apr 12, 2008
A sneeze could knock Trevor Immelman out of the Masters lead. While there were only two major champions within five shots of Immelman
overnight — Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir, both past Masters winners — there
were a host of other proven winners right on his tail as the third round was
set to get underway on Saturday. Between them, the next nine players on the leaderboard — all those within
five shots of the lead — owned 70 wins on the PGA and European Tours, with 34
of them belonging to the two-time Masters champion Mickelson alone. Immelman stood at eight-under 136 for a one-shot lead on Brandt Snedeker, with
Mickelson, Ian Poulter and Steve Flesch three off the pace.

comp –> Ron Green Sr. , The Charlotte ObserverComment on this story AUGUSTA, GA. – When you watch Phil Mickelson play, you see lots of haircuts, hats, shoulders and the collars of some nice shirts. They belong to the people massed in front of you, there to see their Elvis. Where he goes, he drags oceans of people behind him. Galleries go to see Tiger Woods play golf. They go to see Mickelson be Mickelson, which is, as TV commentator David Feherty said, “eccentric, unpredictable, brilliant and flawed.

RIYADH, 12 April 2008 – Kingdom No. 1 Othman Almulla along with Ali Al-Sahli and Ali Balhareth demonstrated Saudi Arabia’s readiness to challenge powerhouse Bahrain for next week’s GCC Golf Championship after superb performances yesterday in the 2008 Fuchs Golf Championship at Dirab Golf Club. Almulla, enjoying a rich vein of form in a stretch that saw him post one victory after another, secured the Best Gross title in the 18-hole stroke play competition with a 2-over 74. Sahli won the First Division (0-9 handicap) crown with a net score of 74 and the veteran Balhareth clinched third place in the division with a 76 as the Saudi trio paraded their pedigree in an inspiring display that should boost confidence of the national team. It also wants to be prepared if other treatment plants are briefly shut down for maintenance. "We’re kind of diversifying our water supply portfolio," Mike Garner, Eastern’s assistant general manager for resource development, said by phone. By adding one more source of water, the district is ensuring it will have enough water for customers during peak times, he said. During peak demand last summer, the district pumped 90 percent of the available water supply to its San Jacinto Valley customers, though it would have preferred to keep 20 percent available in storage, Peter Odencrans, Eastern senior public affairs officer, said by phone. The Hemet plant on Commonwealth Avenue is expected to be in operation in August.Related: Saudi Trio Sparkle in Fuchs Golf Championship [...]
