Junior Joe Carlson rallied from a four-shot deficit on the final five holes and finished with a 7-under 137 to claim medalist honors as St. Viator ran away with the title at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, Ill.

Viator junior Joe Carlson wasn’t thinking about winning the Class 3A boys state golf tournament. He wasn’t thinking about losing it, though, either. “I just stuck to my game plan,” Carlson said. The game plan was all about consistency.

EAST LANSING – While a throng of players, coaches and family members gathered around the scoreboard being updated at the conclusion of the Division 1 girls golf championship, the Pioneer High School team snuck away for a little alone time. The Pioneers were one of six teams in the 15-team field to improve on their first day score on a cool and crisp Saturday afternoon at Forest Akers East Golf Course, but neither the team nor any of its players were in medal contention. That party belonged to Rochester, which finished with a state-record score of 607 to win by a remarkable 54 strokes. So Pioneer gathered to say goodbye to their three senior leaders, who wrapped up their high school careers with a seventh-place team finish. Meanwhile, two young local squads – Brighton and Saline – were soaking in the experience in anticipation of returning. “A lot of the tears that are being shed aren’t because of their performance.

Class 2A boys golf: Fourth-place Cyclones post best state finish …
The State Journal-Register, IL
”After posting a 314 team total on Friday, the Cyclones were seven behind third-place West Chicago Wheaton Academy. But a 322 on Saturday gave SHG a two-day 636, which was 23 behind third-place finisher Wheaton Academy. The fourth-place finish was still the Cyclones’ best in boys state golf since the 1978 and ’79 teams won back-to-back state titles. Griffin finished fifth at state in 1980. Normal University High won its sixth straight state championship as the Pioneers’ 600 was nine ahead of runner-up Centralia. SHG got sub-80 scores Saturday from its top duo of Erickson and sophomore Josh Edison. Erickson overcame a slow start to card a 7-over-par 78, while Edison shaved five strokes from his Friday score to post the Cyclones’ low round of the day: a 74.
