5A-II boys golf: W. Canyon senior leads
Arizona Republic, AZ
Canyon senior leads by Don Ketchum – Nov. 5, 2008 08:23 PM Special for The Republic Cody Anderson still has a bitter taste left in his mouth from last season’s Class 5A Division II state boys golf tournament, when the player from Surprise Willow Canyon finished as state runner-up, one shot behind champion Jin Song of Phoenix Pinnacle. So when the 2008 championship version opened on Wednesday at Maryvale Golf Course in Phoenix, the senior wanted to make sure to make a statement by starting strong. Anderson did just that. His 68 was written on the scoreboard with a red marker, signifying the only below-par score of the day and good for a five-shot lead over his closest competitors.

5A-I boys golf: Hamilton in control
Arizona Republic, AZ
5, 2008 08:19 PM Special for The Republic With eight teams separated by just 10 strokes after the first day of the boys state Class 5A Division I golf tournament, Thursday’s final round at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen figures to be an old-fashioned Western shootout – for second place, that is. The golf factory known as Chandler Hamilton, seeking its fourth straight state title, pretty much put a stranglehold on first place Wednesday, combining for a 1-under par 287 total on the 6,936-yard layout to open a 13-stroke edge over second place Tucson Salpointe Catholic (300). Salpointe sophomore Ricky Lee holds the individual lead, parlaying three birdies and an eagle on the front nine for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke lead over Hamilton’s Chun Ji Kim (69). Behind them are Hamilton’s C.

4A-I boys golf: Cat. Foothills up front
Arizona Republic, AZ
Foothills up front by Jim Richards – Nov. 5, 2008 08:26 PM Special for The Republic The Phoenix-Tucson battle is on in the boys’ Class 4A Division I golf championship at Buckeye’s Sundance Golf Club. And there’s the usual 4A Desert Sky Region battle as well. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can compete with us if we play our best,” Cave Creek Cactus Shadows senior Mike Basco said after his club placed four strokes behind team leader Tucson Catalina Foothills (306) in first-day play of the state tournament. Cactus Shadows (310) got a boost from No. 5 player Payton Weber, whose 2-over-par 74 placed him tied with Scottsdale Chaparral’s Austin Quick for fourth place.
