Plano City Council vetoes golf ball net measure 11:43 AM CT

PLANO — A divided Plano City Council Monday evening rejected an ordinance that would have allowed homeowners to erect protective golf nets. The 4-3 vote followed a heated debate between residents in two golf course communities – Chase Oaks Country Club on the city’s eastern side and Prestonwood Country Club in the west – over the merits of the nets. Opponents, led by homeowners at Prestonwood, argued that those living near golf courses should expect their properties to be pelted with errant balls. Golf net supporters, spearheaded by those who live at Chase Oaks, argued that the volume of balls landing on their property has become dangerous, making nets essential. Councilwoman Sally Magnuson said homeowners who complain about wayward balls bear the risk of living near a golf course. But Councilman Harry LaRosiliere said he believed the city has some responsibility to allow citizens to protect themselves should they deem it necessary.
