Fears About Golf Course Pact Aired
Tampa Tribune, FL
The Tampa City Council approved the contract two years ago, but the agreement only recently came under criticism. The YMCA plans to renovate a former clubhouse for its affiliate program, First Tee of Tampa Bay. The contract troubles residents who remember the city’s 1999 proposal to put the YMCA in charge of the golf course. Then, a grass-roots group, Citizens Who Support Keeping Rogers Park Public, succeeded in getting the city to back down. The group’s members see the contract as another attempt to privatize the course. “We are just so afraid that you’re going to take it from us because everything is usually taken from us,” Mary Alice Dorsett said. City, YMCA and sports authority officials repeatedly have said the course will remain public.
