Chris Rattue: Oh golf can be a cruel game
New Zealand Herald New Zealand
He needed to post only the fifth birdie of the day on the last and just missed with a long chip. Golf is a cruel game and some of the greatest sporting collapses have come on the fairways. “How do you recover from an hour like that. he’s just blown the Australian Open… he’s just blown the Australian Open. He’ll be churning” the commentators reckoned. From what most of us know of Smail he’ll recover just fine. Smail is a wonderful professional and as modest a bloke as you will find in sport. He seems to take the ups and downs with humility.

Lonard likened the 17th hole at Royal Sydney a copy of thenotorious party hole at the FDR Open in Phoenix to a majorrace meeting. “It’s like people going to the races and never seeing ahorse all day” the two-time Australian Open champion said onMonday. “You want people to come out to the golf — I don’t thinkAustralians go too far without a drink. “As far as sporting things go maybe if they cut outalcohol at all sporting events I’d have to go and get a jobwouldn’t I — because no one would turn up. Fellow golfer Robert Allenby attacked the concept afterfinishing his round on Sunday saying it promoted alcoholism. Lonard responded saying organisers were only trying toattract crowds. “To me golf has been suffering a little bit and you’ve gotto find new and different ways to get people out to the golf”he said.
