In reading the bevy of articles and reports that followed Geoff gilvy’s win at the Mercedes-Benz Championship this week I found one note of striking importance. At first glance it seems trivial. It would seem to be an observation that fails to carry much significance or weight but after much contemplation and my total lack of ability to focus on anything happening in the moment (what can I say I’m a daydreamer) it seems to be a note of severe importance for those who love the game of golf but more importantly for those that tinge the experience with a bit of fantasy competition. Jason Sobel of ESPN an outstanding writer and purveyor of the game noted gilvy enjoyed one of the more dominating performances we have seen on the course at Kapalua in some time but that win has historically served as a sign of strife ahead. Sobel notes the last eight winners at Kapalua have earned a combined three PGA wins over the course of the seasons that followed those wins. No golfer has won more than one additional PGA event in the same season in which he won the Mercedes-Benz Championship over the span and Sobel points to (go figure) Tiger Woods as the only exception to that rule (and that was in 2000). He goes on to question if motivation dies for golfers following that win knowing they have already secured a bounty of rewards (an invite back to the tourney next year a fat paycheck a new Benz SL550).
