NorCal boys golf: McElyea misses trip to state with loss in playoff

McElyea shot an even-par 72 at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico to finished tied for seventh. He birdied two of the last three holes to force a playoff with Pleasant Valley’s Jessie Stephens. After scorching his drive on the first playoff hole a 498-yard par-5 McElyea missed the green on his approach with a 9-iron chipped on and just missed the birdie putt according to Harbor coach Scott Bedell. McElyea pushed his tee shot through the trees on the par-4 second playoff hole and settled for bogey while Stephens two-putted for par to earn the trip to state.
